Roundtable discussion on the findings of our research on the long‑term impacts of SEA in peacekeeping operations
December 8, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
In the past 15 years, despite the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and the Secretary-General’s Bulletin on Zero Tolerance of sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) by peacekeepers, abuse by interveners remains prevalent in peace operations, as last year’s scandal in the Central African Republic demonstrated.
Dr Jasmine Westendorf from La Trobe University and the Humanitarian Advisory Group have partnered this year on a multi‑country research project investigating the long‑term impact of SEA by international interveners (including peacekeepers, aid workers, diplomats, private contractors and others) on peacebuilding outcomes, the effectiveness and challenges of policies that aim to prevent or respond to such SEA, and the ways in which SEA relates to other forms of misconduct or failures in peace operations. We have conducted primary research in Timor‑Leste, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Geneva and at UN Headquarters in New York, and we would like to invite you to attend a roundtable discussion on Thursday December 8th to share the findings of our research. We will be inviting representatives from the government, defence, humanitarian and academic sectors to respond to the research and its implications in open discussions during the day, and it is our hope that these discussions can facilitate ideas sharing, and inform future policy and research directions.
Key speakers responding to the research findings and contextualising them to broader issues of WPS, peacekeeping and international relations include: Prof. Jacqui True (Director, Monash Gender, Peace and Security), Prof. Karin Aggestam (Lund University and Visiting Fellow at Monash GPS), Dr. Charles Hunt (RMIT), Lisa Sharland (ASPI), and Susan Hutchinson (The Institute for Inclusive Security).
Please RSVP to Alejandra Pineda at M.PinedaSanabria@latrobe.edu.au, including details of any dietary requirements you have.
