Disaster Ready Action Research: Learning from Accessible and Inclusive Communication Practices in Vanuatu and Timor-Leste

Effective two-way communication is a human right crucial for disaster and climate resilience. Yet, complex language and limited channels often exclude persons with disabilities, who face higher risks and barriers to accessing information and participation. Programs like Disaster READY (2022-2027) by the AHP, promote disability inclusion and support local disability organisations to improve equitable access in the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
This cross-learning study funded by World Vision Australia explores effective inclusive communication practices, enabling factors for safe engagement, and gaps needing practical solutions, focusing on Vanuatu and Timor-Leste. Inclusive communication means accessible, clear messages and active involvement of persons with disabilities to ensure no one is left behind.
