Closing the Loop: Pakistan Flood Emergency (Sept 2022)

Research and resources for humanitarian response in real time

Research and resources to guide humanitarian response are not always at our fingertips at the moment we need them most – when a crisis hits. Working with our partners, we want to support the sector with at-a-glance information and links that can play a small part in ‘closing the loop’ between research and practice in real time.

QUICK SNAPSHOT

Since mid-June, historic monsoonal rains, flooding and landslides have affected 33 million people in Pakistan, killing more than 1000, leaving 3 million displaced, and damaging or destroying almost 1 million homes.

Much of the country is under water – 116 districts have been affected, with 66 officially declared by the Government of Pakistan as ‘calamity hit’.

The situation is expected to worsen in September with unrelenting heavy rains and flooding forecast to continue.

“Pakistan is awash in suffering. The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids — the relentless impact of epochal levels of rain and flooding… millions are homeless, schools and health facilities have been destroyed, livelihoods are shattered, critical infrastructure wiped out, and people’s hopes and dreams have been washed away.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres, 30 August 2022.
